According to research findings, the first few years after a child is born are very significant to the learning process. Compared to later years of development, the rate and ability to absorb knowledge is highest during these years. Part of the reason for this is that the brain develops at the highest rate at this time. As a result, learning ability of a child in the future can be highly enhanced by being exposed to good teachers in preschool.

Some of the common themes are social personal, economic and emotional development, listening, play, communication, talking, self-help skills, mathematics awareness, creative and aesthetic development, literacy, and scientific thinking.

Certain standards must be observed in all preschools depending on the jurisdiction within which the facility operates. The standards govern various components including class size, services, ratio of teacher to students, administration, curriculum, assessment, interaction between the teacher and children, classroom environment, and standards. The curriculum is designed for pupils of different ages. Different facilities place different levels of emphasis on the various components.
